If you are suffering from prolonged spells of coughing, try an easy home remedy for cough in form of lemon tea with some ginger. Ginger has great medicinal properties and helps to suppress respiratory infections. Ginger acts as an answer to cough symptoms and helps to keep the system hydrated. Lemon contains ascorbic acid and aims at neutralizing the phlegm portion. To prepare a cup of lemon and ginger tea, boil tea leaves in water to which you have added grated ginger. Strain and before sipping the hot tea, add a few drops of lime juice.

Holy Basil or Tulsi Remedy

With its curative powers the basil or tulsi is considered equal to God by the Indians. Basil has anti-oxidant properties and its action against the free radicals makes it a superb tonic for us.

If you are suffering from cold, cough and fever then the holy basil is a good option for medicine. Take about seven holy basil leaves and five cloves. Mix them in one glass of water and boil the concoction until the volume of water becomes its half. Add a pinch of rock salt to it and drink it while it is still hot. Keep your body covered well with clothes in order to make it sweat. Fever gets lessened rapidly and the cold symptoms also show an improvement.

2.Honey - Home Remedies for Cough

Honey and Lemon Remedy

Honey has analgesic properties and is known since ages for its soothingly uplifting effects on those who are suffering from cough. Add a tea spoon of honey to any hot beverage like a cup of milk or tea and drink it at regularly. A combination of honey and lime when blended with hot water are excellent to drive away unsettling cough.  Take it regularly once in every hour to sooth your throat and also clear the excess mucus.

Honey and Pepper Remedy

Honey also acts as an anti-biotic in suppressing the bacteria that cause coughing. If you are prone to night coughing, then try taking two tea spoons of raw honey before retiring to bed. This helps in reducing coughing and enabling you to have good sleep.

Take a teaspoon of natural honey with a pinch of black pepper powder at least twice a day for persistent coughing.

Honey and Aloe Vera Juice Remedy

Prepare a concoction by adding two teaspoons of honey to a glass of aloe vera juice. Mix well and drink the same. This is a great home remedy for cough.

Honey-Carrot Juice Remedy

If you are averse to taking honey in raw form, you may try adding two spoons of honey to a cup of carrot juice made by using 4 to 5 carrots in some water. Drink the honey-carrots concoction at least three times a day to find relief with home remedies for cough.

3.Tea & Chicken Soup for Cough Relief

Mullein Tea for Congestion and Cough

Mullein tea is popular to get rid of chest congestion that happens due to coughing, flu and colds. Mullein tea acts as a cough expectorant, as it loosens the trapped mucous and also helps to soothe sore throat. Make a cup of mullein tea by filling a strainer or tea ball with dried mullein herbs.  Steep the tea ball in a cup of boiling water for about 10 minutes. If you prefer sweeten the tea with raw honey and drink frequently to relieve cough symptoms.

Chicken Soup Antiviral Remedy

Chicken soup has magical qualities to knock out a flu or cold. Even during the 12th century, a Jewish physician, Maimonides had recommended consuming chicken soup with vegetables to fight flu and cold. It is better to take advantage of a bowl of warm organic chicken soup with organic vegetables and be relieved of cold symptoms (organic chicken and vegetables are high in antioxidants). Non-organic chicken soup on the other hand helps to relieve cold symptoms, but it also supplies your body with herbicides, pesticides, growth hormones, and antibiotics all of which are not recommended for good health. Being organic is the way to go and get well rapidly with home remedies for cough.

My aunts favorite home remedies for cough was to mix licorice powder with honey and have us dissolve the stuff slowly in our mouths. In just two days we would be rid of cough. Of course we had to inhale fumes of eaucalyptus oil added to hot water. Whenever anyone came down with colds and coughs we knew we were in for it.

My memories of childhood include coughs that would plague me and my grandmothers plain recipe for coughs. That was just a mixture of hot milk to which she added a spoonful of turmeric powder. Taking it before sleep gave me relief and sound sleep.

My kids love to eat sweets and ice cream. Not surprising they come down with coughs and colds. My remedy for their cough is to make them gargle with warm salty water at least three to four times a day and in a day or two they get relief. Along with gargling I make them drink warm water to which I add some ginger juice and lemon juice. Before they go to bed I give them a stick of licorice to chew and this is really effective as it is soothing and gives undisturbed sleep.

Chewing on a garlic clove is all you need to do to get rid of coughs. Garlic is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Chew it in the morning and before you go to sleep. Dont waste money on expensive cough syrups that contain codeine or ephedrine unless infection is severe.

If I get coughs my simple way to get rid of it is to make tea with just a little bit of tea leaves, no milk and add ginger and tulsi leaves. Drinking it four or five times a day, moderately warm, helps. However, my mother used a different method. She would boil jaggery in water, add crushed pepper and make us drink that infusion. This formula is also quite effective. So, mother and mothers to be, make note for future!
